Researching 1920s Chicago for my novel-in-progress has stumped me several times. Writing my children’s books came naturally from experience. My science fiction required deep dives into artificial intelligence and the ethics surrounding it. But historical fiction demands full immersion—bringing both the story and setting to life while staying true to the era’s details.

The staff at the Southlake Library introduced me to TexShare Databases and guided me on how to use them. While our library isn’t a traditional research institution, the free tools they provided have been invaluable.

Through these resources, I discovered a 1924 Chicago Voter’s Guide to craft an authentic voting experience for my character. I found journals recounting the awe of listening to radio serials for the first time. The facts I’ve uncovered are extensive, each one helping me shape a more realistic and immersive novel. And I owe that to our library.

The staff has been wonderful—always encouraging me to keep asking questions. Their support has been wonderful. ~ Lois Melbourne
